About Tochirun

Tochirun is the founder and editor of Plant Compendium. Trained as a biologist at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed) — admitted in 2009 to the Faculty of Biology, with coursework spanning mycology, ecology, and applied biology. Selected as a recipient of the Indonesian Ministry of Research's Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Penelitian (PKMP) research grant for a project on the application of fermentation technology to breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) — published research output documents this work.

After years of frustration with houseplant content that traded photography for substance, Tochirun started this site in 2026. Most plant care articles online recycle the same five sentences without citation; Plant Compendium exists to fix that. Every claim links back to an authoritative source — the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for pet safety data, the Royal Horticultural Society for care guidance, Missouri Botanical Garden for botanical detail. The biology background informs the editorial standard: if a claim cannot be cited, it does not get published.

Based in Indonesia and writing for a global English-speaking audience, Tochirun grows roughly 15-20 houseplants at any given time, with a particular focus on tropical species that thrive in the high-humidity climate of Southeast Asia. Pet safety is a personal priority — every plant added to the database is cross-checked against the ASPCA toxic plant list before publication.

Plant Compendium is a small operation: editorial choices, content writing, image sourcing, and code are all handled in-house. No sponsored placements, no ghostwriters, no AI-only content. When AI tools assist drafting, every published page is reviewed and edited by hand for accuracy and voice.

Topics I cover

  • pet-safe houseplants
  • tropical plant care for humid climates
  • houseplant pet toxicity (ASPCA-cited)
  • data-driven plant care methodology
  • plant biology applied to indoor cultivation

Topics I do not cover

Honest disclosure — these areas are outside my hands-on experience and you should look elsewhere for authoritative guidance:

  • outdoor gardening at scale (commercial farming, landscape design)
  • edible vegetables and herbs grown for consumption
  • rare collector plants beyond mass-market houseplant species
  • orchid speciality care (a planned future expansion area)

Plants I have grown successfully (1+ year)

Plants I have killed (and what I learned)

Failures inform care advice as much as successes do. These plants did not survive in my care — the matching care guides reflect what went wrong and how to avoid it.
