How this tool works

Every plant in our database has been cross-checked against the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's toxic and non-toxic plant lists. When you select plants, the tool sorts them into four groups — pet-safe, toxic to cats only, toxic to dogs only, and toxic to both — and surfaces the symptoms and emergency response steps relevant to your specific pets.

For toxic plants, we suggest pet-safe alternatives drawn from our care database that match on key traits (size, light needs, growth pattern). All recommendations link to full care guides if you want to learn more before swapping.

If your pet ate a toxic plant

  1. Remove any visible plant material from your pet's mouth.
  2. Rinse the mouth gently with water if your pet allows.
  3. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by a vet — it can make some poisonings worse.
  4. Call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. A consultation fee may apply but it can save your pet's life.
  5. Bring a sample or photo of the plant to the vet visit.

Limitations

This tool covers 52 popular houseplants. If you have a plant not listed, check the ASPCA database directly. Severity ratings (mild / moderate / severe) reflect typical reactions — your individual pet may react more or less strongly. When in doubt, contact your vet.
